Bachelet condena violencia en las fronteras de Venezuela
Ginebra (24 de febrero de 2019) – La Alta Comisionada de Naciones Unidas para los Derechos Humanos Michelle Bachelet condenó el domingo los hechos violentos tanto en diversos puntos de las fronteras de Venezuela con Colombia y Brasil, como en el interior del país. En particular, Bachelet condenó el uso excesivo de la fuerza empleado tanto por las fuerzas de seguridad venezolanas, como por grupos pro-gubernamentales armados que tuvieron como resultado al menos cuatro muertos y más de 300 personas heridas el viernes y el sábado.
“Se ha disparado a personas y algunas han muerto, hay quien ha recibido heridas de las que nunca se recuperará, incluyendo la pérdida de un ojo”, dijo Bachelet. “Estas son escenas deplorables. El Gobierno venezolano debe obligar a los cuerpos de seguridad a dejar de emplear el uso excesivo de la fuerza contra manifestantes desarmados y ciudadanos comunes”.
Bachelet dijo que ha recibido informes de varios incidentes violentos -en algunos casos prolongados- en diferentes puntos de las fronteras con Colombia y Brasil vinculados al bloqueo por parte de las fuerzas de seguridad de la asistencia que se dirigía hacia el interior de Venezuela a través de fronteras cerradas.
La Oficina de la Alta Comisionada también recibió varios informes que apuntan al involucramiento de grupos armados pro-gubernamentales en los ataques violentos en contra de manifestantes, y Bachelet urgió al Gobierno a “frenar a estos grupos y arrestar a aquellos que utilizaron la fuerza de manera ilegal en contra de manifestantes. El uso de fuerzas paramilitares o parapoliciales tienen una larga y siniestra historia en la región,” añadió Bachelet. “Y es muy alarmante verlas operar de manera tan clara en Venezuela. El Gobierno puede y debe frenar que estos grupos sigan exacerbando una situación ya de por si altamente inflamable”.
Bachelet condemns violence at Venezuelan borders
GENEVA (24 February 2019) — The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet on Sunday condemned violent scenes at various points along Venezuela’s borders with Colombia and Brazil, as well as within Venezuela itself. In particular, she condemned the excessive use of force used by the Venezuelan security forces, as well the involvement of pro-government elements, which have resulted in at least four confirmed deaths and more than 300 injuries on Friday and Saturday.
“People have been shot and killed, others have reportedly received wounds from which they will never completely recover, including losing eyes,” said Bachelet. “These are disgraceful scenes. The Venezuelan government must stop its forces from using excessive force against unarmed protesters and ordinary citizens.”
Bachelet said she had received reports of numerous and, in some cases prolonged, violent incidents, at different points along the borders with Colombia and Brazil, as the Venezuelan security forces tried to halt the aid supplies coming into Venezuela through closed border points.
The UN Human Rights Office also received several reports pointing at the involvement of armed pro-government elements in the violent attacks on protestors, and Bachelet urged the Government “to rein in these groups and arrest those among them who have used force against protestors. The use of proxy forces has a long and sinister history in the region,” she added. “And it is very alarming to see them operating openly in this way in Venezuela. The Government can, and must, stop them from exacerbating an already highly inflammable situation.”
