Kohelet – Ecclesiastes – Chapter 2

1 I said to myself, “Come now, I will mix [wine] with joy and experience pleasure”; and behold, this too was vanity.		אאָמַ֤רְתִּי אֲנִי֙ בְּלִבִּ֔י לְכָה־נָּ֛א אֲנַסְּכָ֥ה בְשִׂמְחָ֖ה וּרְאֵ֣ה בְט֑וֹב וְהִנֵּ֥ה גַם־ה֖וּא הָֽבֶל:
2 Of laughter, I said, “[It is] mingled”; and concerning joy, “What does this accomplish?”		בלִשְׂח֖וֹק אָמַ֣רְתִּי מְהוֹלָ֑ל וּלְשִׂמְחָ֖ה מַה־זֹּ֥ה עֹשָֽׂה:
3 I searched in my heart to indulge my body with wine, and my heart conducting itself with wisdom and holding onto folly, until I would see which is better for the children of men that they should do under the heavens, the number of the days of their lives.		גתַּ֣רְתִּי בְלִבִּ֔י לִמְשׁ֥וֹךְ בַּיַּ֖יִן אֶת־בְּשָׂרִ֑י וְלִבִּ֞י נֹהֵ֤ג בַּֽחָכְמָה֙ וְלֶֽאֱחֹ֣ז בְּסִכְל֔וּת עַ֣ד אֲשֶׁר־אֶרְאֶ֗ה אֵי־זֶ֨ה ט֜וֹב לִבְנֵ֤י הָֽאָדָם֙ אֲשֶׁ֤ר יַֽעֲשׂוּ֙ תַּ֣חַת הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם מִסְפַּ֖ר יְמֵ֥י חַיֵּיהֶֽם:
4 I made myself great works; I built myself houses, and I planted myself vineyards.		דהִגְדַּ֖לְתִּי מַֽעֲשָׂ֑י בָּנִ֤יתִי לִי֙ בָּתִּ֔ים נָטַ֥עְתִּי לִ֖י כְּרָמִֽים:
5 I made myself gardens and orchards, and I planted in them all sorts of fruit trees.		העָשִׂ֣יתִי לִ֔י גַּנּ֖וֹת וּפַרְדֵּסִ֑ים וְנָטַ֥עְתִּי בָהֶ֖ם עֵ֥ץ כָּל־פֶּֽרִי:
6 I made myself pools of water, to water from them a forest sprouting with trees.		ועָשִׂ֥יתִי לִ֖י בְּרֵכ֣וֹת מָ֑יִם לְהַשְׁק֣וֹת מֵהֶ֔ם יַ֖עַר צוֹמֵ֥חַ עֵצִֽים:
7 I acquired male and female slaves, and I had household members; also I had possession of cattle and flocks, more than all who were before me in Jerusalem.		זקָנִ֨יתִי֙ עֲבָדִ֣ים וּשְׁפָח֔וֹת וּבְנֵי־בַ֖יִת הָ֣יָה לִ֑י גַּ֣ם מִקְנֶה֩ בָקָ֨ר וָצֹ֤אן הַרְבֵּה֙ הָ֣יָה לִ֔י מִכֹּ֛ל שֶֽׁהָי֥וּ לְפָנַ֖י בִּירֽוּשָׁלָֽ ִם:
8 I accumulated for myself also silver and gold, and the treasures of the kings and the provinces; I acquired for myself various types of musical instruments, the delight of the sons of men, wagons and coaches.		חכָּנַ֤סְתִּי לִי֙ גַּם־כֶּ֣סֶף וְזָהָ֔ב וּסְגֻלַּ֥ת מְלָכִ֖ים וְהַמְּדִינ֑וֹת עָשִׂ֨יתִי לִ֜י שָׁרִ֣ים וְשָׁר֗וֹת וְתַֽעֲנֻג֛וֹת בְּנֵ֥י הָֽאָדָ֖ם שִׁדָּ֥ה וְשִׁדּֽוֹת:
9 So I became great, and I increased more than all who were before me in Jerusalem; also my wisdom remained with me.		טוְגָדַ֣לְתִּי וְהוֹסַ֔פְתִּי מִכֹּ֛ל שֶֽׁהָיָ֥ה לְפָנַ֖י בִּירֽוּשָׁלָ֑ ִם אַ֥ף חָכְמָתִ֖י עָ֥מְדָה לִּֽי:
10 And [of] all that my eyes desired I did not deprive them; I did not deprive my heart of any joy, but my heart rejoiced with all my toil, and this was my portion from all my toil.		יוְכֹל֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר שָֽׁאֲל֣וּ עֵינַ֔י לֹ֥א אָצַ֖לְתִּי מֵהֶ֑ם לֹֽא־מָנַ֨עְתִּי אֶת־לִבִּ֜י מִכָּל־שִׂמְחָ֗ה כִּֽי־לִבִּ֤י שָׂמֵ֨חַ֙ מִכָּל־עֲמָלִ֔י וְזֶֽה־הָיָ֥ה חֶלְקִ֖י מִכָּל־עֲמָלִֽי:
11 Then I turned [to look] at all my deeds that my hands had wrought and upon the toil that I had toiled to do, and behold everything is vanity and frustration, and there is no profit under the sun.		יאוּפָנִ֣יתִֽי אֲנִ֗י בְּכָֽל־מַֽעֲשַׂי֙ שֶֽׁעָשׂ֣וּ יָדַ֔י וּבֶֽעָמָ֖ל שֶֽׁעָמַ֣לְתִּי לַֽעֲשׂ֑וֹת וְהִנֵּ֨ה הַכֹּ֥ל הֶ֨בֶל֙ וּרְע֣וּת ר֔וּחַ וְאֵ֥ין יִתְר֖וֹן תַּ֥חַת הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ:
12 And I turned to see wisdom and madness and folly, for what is the man who will come after the king, concerning that which they have already done?		יבוּפָנִ֤יתִֽי אֲנִי֙ לִרְא֣וֹת חָכְמָ֔ה וְהֽוֹלֵל֖וֹת וְסִכְל֑וּת כִּ֣י | מֶ֣ה הָֽאָדָ֗ם שֶׁיָּבוֹא֙ אַֽחֲרֵ֣י הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ אֵ֥ת אֲשֶׁר־כְּבָ֖ר עָשֽׂוּהוּ:
13 And I saw that wisdom has an advantage over folly, as the advantage of light over darkness.		יגוְרָאִ֣יתִי אָ֔נִי שֶׁיֵּ֥שׁ יִתְר֛וֹן לַֽחָכְמָ֖ה מִן־הַסִּכְל֑וּת כִּֽיתְר֥וֹן הָא֖וֹר מִן־הַחֹֽשֶׁךְ:
14 The wise man has eyes in its beginning, but the fool goes in the darkness, and I too know that one event happens to them all.		ידהֶֽחָכָם֙ עֵינָ֣יו בְּרֹאשׁ֔וֹ וְהַכְּסִ֖יל בַּחֹ֣שֶׁךְ הוֹלֵ֑ךְ וְיָדַ֣עְתִּי גַם־אָ֔נִי שֶׁמִּקְרֶ֥ה אֶחָ֖ד יִקְרֶ֥ה אֶת־כֻּלָּֽם:
15 And I said to myself, “As it happens to the fool, so will it happen to me too, so why then did I become wiser?” And I said to myself that this too is vanity.		טווְאָמַ֨רְתִּֽי אֲנִ֜י בְּלִבִּ֗י כְּמִקְרֵ֤ה הַכְּסִיל֙ גַּם־אֲנִ֣י יִקְרֵ֔נִי וְלָ֧מָּה חָכַ֛מְתִּי אֲנִ֖י אָ֣ז יֹתֵ֑ר וְדִבַּ֣רְתִּי בְלִבִּ֔י שֶׁגַּם־זֶ֖ה הָֽבֶל:
16 For there is no remembrance of the wise man even as of the fool forever, seeing that in the coming days, all is forgotten. And how shall the wise die with the fool?		טזכִּי֩ אֵ֨ין זִכְר֧וֹן לֶֽחָכָ֛ם עִֽם־הַכְּסִ֖יל לְעוֹלָ֑ם בְּשֶׁכְּבָ֞ר הַיָּמִ֤ים הַבָּאִים֙ הַכֹּ֣ל נִשְׁכָּ֔ח וְאֵ֛יךְ יָמ֥וּת הֶֽחָכָ֖ם עִֽם־הַכְּסִֽיל:
17 So I hated the living, for the deed that was done under the sun grieved me, for everything is vanity and frustration.		יזוְשָׂנֵ֨אתִי֙ אֶת־הַ֣חַיִּ֔ים כִּ֣י רַ֤ע עָלַי֙ הַֽמַּֽעֲשֶׂ֔ה שֶֽׁנַּֽעֲשָׂ֖ה תַּ֣חַת הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ כִּֽי־הַכֹּ֥ל הֶ֖בֶל וּרְע֥וּת רֽוּחַ:
18 And I hated all my toil that I toil under the sun, that I should leave it to the man who will be after me.		יחוְשָׂנֵ֤אתִֽי אֲנִי֙ אֶת־כָּל־עֲמָלִ֔י שֶֽׁאֲנִ֥י עָמֵ֖ל תַּ֣חַת הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ שֶׁ֣אַנִּיחֶ֔נּוּ לָֽאָדָ֖ם שֶׁיִּֽהְיֶ֥ה אַֽחֲרָֽי:
19 And who knows whether he will be wise or foolish. And he will rule over all my toil that I have toiled and that I have gained wisdom under the sun; this too is vanity.		יטוּמִ֣י יוֹדֵ֗עַ הֶֽחָכָ֤ם יִֽהְיֶה֙ א֣וֹ סָכָ֔ל וְיִשְׁלַט֙ בְּכָל־עֲמָלִ֔י שֶֽׁעָמַ֥לְתִּי וְשֶֽׁחָכַ֖מְתִּי תַּ֣חַת הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ גַּם־זֶ֖ה הָֽבֶל:
20 And I turned about to cause my heart to despair concerning all the toil that I toiled under the sun.		כוְסַבּ֥וֹתִֽי אֲנִ֖י לְיַאֵ֣שׁ אֶת־לִבִּ֑י עַ֚ל כָּל־הֶ֣עָמָ֔ל שֶֽׁעָמַ֖לְתִּי תַּ֥חַת הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ:
21 For there is a man whose toil is with wisdom and with knowledge and with honesty and to a man who did not toil for it he will give it as his portion; this too is vanity and a great evil.		כאכִּי־יֵ֣שׁ אָדָ֗ם שֶֽׁעֲמָל֛וֹ בְּחָכְמָ֥ה וּבְדַ֖עַת וּבְכִשְׁר֑וֹן וּלְאָדָ֞ם שֶׁלֹּ֤א עָֽמַל־בּוֹ֙ יִתְּנֶ֣נּוּ חֶלְק֔וֹ גַּם־זֶ֥ה הֶ֖בֶל וְרָעָ֥ה רַבָּֽה:
22 For what has a man out of all his toil and the breaking of his heart that he toils under the sun?		כבכִּ֠י מֶֽה־הֹוֶ֤ה לָֽאָדָם֙ בְּכָל־עֲמָל֔וֹ וּבְרַעְי֖וֹן לִבּ֑וֹ שְׁה֥וּא עָמֵ֖ל תַּ֥חַת הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ:
23 For all his days are pains and his occupation is vexation; even at night his heart does not rest; this too is vanity.		כגכִּ֧י כָל־יָמָ֣יו מַכְאֹבִ֗ים וָכַ֨עַס֙ עִנְיָנ֔וֹ גַּם־בַּלַּ֖יְלָה לֹֽא־שָׁכַ֣ב לִבּ֑וֹ גַּם־זֶ֖ה הֶ֥בֶל הֽוּא:
24 Is it not good for a man that he eat and drink and show himself enjoyment in his toil? This too have I seen that it is from the hand of God.		כדאֵֽין־ט֤וֹב בָּֽאָדָם֙ שֶׁיֹּאכַ֣ל וְשָׁתָ֔ה וְהֶרְאָ֧ה אֶת־נַפְשׁ֛וֹ ט֖וֹב בַּֽעֲמָל֑וֹ גַּם־זֹה֙ רָאִ֣יתִי אָ֔נִי כִּ֛י מִיַּ֥ד הָֽאֱלֹהִ֖ים הִֽיא:
25 For who will eat and who will hasten [to swallow it] except me?		כהכִּ֣י מִ֥י יֹאכַ֛ל וּמִ֥י יָח֖וּשׁ ח֥וּץ מִמֶּֽנִּי:
26 For to a man who is good in His sight, He has given wisdom and knowledge and joy, but to the sinner He has given an occupation to gather and to accumulate, to give to him who is good in God’s sight; this too is vanity and frustration.		כוכִּ֤י לְאָדָם֙ שֶׁטּ֣וֹב לְפָנָ֔יו נָתַ֛ן חָכְמָ֥ה וְדַ֖עַת וְשִׂמְחָ֑ה וְלַֽחוֹטֶא֩ נָתַ֨ן עִנְיָ֜ן לֶֽאֱסֹ֣ף וְלִכְנ֗וֹס לָתֵת֙ לְטוֹב֙ לִפְנֵ֣י הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים גַּם־זֶ֥ה הֶ֖בֶל וּרְע֥וּת רֽוּחַ:

ECLESIASTÉS 2

(1) Me dije: “Probaré con la vida alegre y el placer”, mas he aquí que eso  también era vanidad.

(2) Dije de la risa: “Es locura” y de la alegría: “¿Qué logra?”.

(3) Busque en mi corazón cómo complacer mi cuerpo  y conducir mi corazón con sabiduría, como había que emplear la insensatez, hasta ver en qué sería bueno que se ocupen los hijos de los hombres bajo el cielo, los pocos días de su vida.

(4) Me hice grandes obras, me construí casas, planté para mí viñedos;

(5) hice para mí huertos y jardines y planté árboles frutales de toda clase;

(6) hice para mí estanques para que con el agua se regase el bosque donde se cultivan mis árboles;

(7) compré siervos y siervas nacidos en mi casa. También tuve grandes posesiones de hatos y rebaños de ganado, más que cuantos tuvieron antes de mí en Jerusalem.

(8) También amontoné plata y oro, formando tesoros tales como los que tienen los reyes y las provincias. Me proveí de cantores y cantoras y en cuanto al deleite de los hijos de los hombres, muchísimas mujeres.

(9) De tal suerte que me engrandecí más que todos los que habían permanecido conmigo.

(10) Cualquier cosa que deseaban mis ojos, yo no los privaba de ella. No le escatimaba ningun placer a mi corazón porque mi corazón gozaba de toda mi labor, siendo ésta mi porción de toda mi labor.

(11) Entonces, consideré todas las obras que había hecho mis manos y la labor que me había afanado por hacer, y he aquí que todo era vanidad y correr tras el viento  y que no había provecho bajo el sol.

(12) Y me volví para considerar la sabiduría, la locura y la insensatez, pues ¿qué puede hacer el hombre después del rey? Sólo lo que ya ha sido hecho antes.

(13) Y vi que la sabiduría sobrepuja a la ignorancia como luz a las tinieblas.

(14) Lo ojos del sabio están en su cabeza, pero el necio anda en la oscuridad. Y también verifiqué que un mismo suceso les ocurre a todos.

(15) Entonces me dije en mi corazón: “Lo que le ocurrirá al necio, también me sucederá a mí. ¿Para qué entonces fui más sabio?”, y me dije en mi corazón que esto también es vanidad.

(16) Por cuanto del sabio, lo mismo que del necio, no habrá memoria para siempre, pues en los días venideros, todo habrá sido olvidado mucho tiempo ya. ¡Y cómo el sabio muere como el necio!

(17) Entonces odié la vida, ya que me fastidiaba el trabajo que se hace bajo el sol, porque todo es vanidad y correr tras el viento,

(18) y aborrecí todo el trabajo que hacía bajo el sol, viendo que debía dejarlo al hombre que sería después de mí.

(19) ¿Y quién sabe si será sabio o necio, o si podrá dominar todo mi trabajo, en el que me mostré sabio bajo el sol? Esto también es vanidad.

(20) Me volví y me desesperé en mi corazón por todo el trabajo que había hecho bajo el sol.

(21) Porque hay hombres (que ejecutan su) labor con sabiduría, con ciencia y con habilidad y sin embargo, tienen que dejar todo a quienes no trabajan. Eso también es vanidad y un gran mal.

(22) Pues ¿qué tiene un hombre de todos su trabajo y de los afanes de su corazón, con los que se esforzó bajo el sol?

(23) Porque todos sus días son dolores y sus ocupaciones un fastidio. Sí, ni siquiera de noche descansa su corazón. Esto también es vanidad.

(24) No hay nada mejor para un hombre que comer y beber y que su alma disfrute de su trabajo. Eso también lo vi, que es de la mano De Dios.

(25) ¿Quién puede comer y quién puede gozar más que yo?

(25) Porque el hombre que es bueno a Sus ojos, Él le da sabiduría, ciencia y alegría, pero al pecador le asigna la tarea de recoger y amontonar para dárselo al que es bueno a los ojos de Dios. Esto también es vanidad y corre tras el viento.
