Simcha Torah – “Regocijo de la Torá”

Después de los siete días felices de Sucot, llegamos a la feliz fiesta de Shemini Atzeret / Simjat Torá.

En la diáspora, el primer día se conoce por su nombre bíblico, Shemini Atzeret. Todavía vivimos en la Sucá, pero sin una bendición.

El segundo día de Shemini Atzeret se llama Simjat Torá (“Regocijo de la Torá”). En este día concluimos, y comenzamos de nuevo, el ciclo anual de lectura de la Torá. El evento está marcado con gran regocijo, especialmente durante la procesión “hakafot”, en la que marchamos, cantamos y bailamos con los rollos de la Torá alrededor de la mesa de lectura en la sinagoga. “En Simjat Torá”, dice el jasídico, “nos regocijamos en la Torá, y la Torá se regocija en nosotros; la Torá también quiere bailar, así que nos convertimos en los pies danzantes de la Torá”.

Ambos días se celebran con velas encendidas por la noche, comidas festivas tanto de día como de noche y desistimiento del trabajo. En Israel, toda la festividad se compacta en un embriagador período de 24 horas.

Vayikra – Leviticus – Chapter 23

36 [For] a seven day period, you shall bring a fire offering to the Lord. On the eighth day, it shall be a holy occasion for you, and you shall bring a fire offering to the Lord. It is a [day of] detention. You shall not perform any work of labor.

LEVÍTICO 23:36

Los siete días, brindaréis ofrendas ígneas al Eterno. Al octavo día, que será de santa convocación para vosotros, presentaréis ofrenda ignea al Eterno y no haréis trabajo servil.

Shemini Atzeret / Simchat Torah in a Nutshell

The Holiday when we become the Torah’s “Dancing Feet”

Immediately following the seven-day festival of Sukkot comes the two-day festival of Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah. (In the Land of Israel, the festival is “compacted” in a single day).

Shemini Atzeret means “the eighth [day] of retention“; the chassidic masters explain that the primary purpose of the festival is to retain and “conceive” the spiritual revelations and powers that we are granted during the festivals of the month of Tishrei, so that we could subsequently apply them to our lives throughout the year.
